After the crisis of confidence of the Lucky Colour + Candy Blaster + Keep It Wonky era, after dealing with the horrifying reality of being perceived, I decided to take a year off making music. I can’t remember exactly when this was, but I realised I didn’t enjoy it at all at the time. It was like I was worried I might lose a job that I wasn’t getting paid for, not like I was making things I wanted to make for my own creative fulfillment and definitely not like I was making entertainment that was in any kind of demand.
It was pretty close to exactly a year after that when I heard a potential sample in a TV show and was inspired to boot up Ableton and see if the Gesaffelstein-adjacent idea in my head sounded any good in the real world. That track - called ‘Dream’ - is on an old hard drive somewhere.
I made Never Sleep the same afternoon. This is what you get when someone who is bad at doing soundalikes tries to do a soundalike with the little dub scientist in the back of his head calling all the shots. Dark, hypnotic and swirling, like you’re trying to keep your head above water while black digital waves are rising around you. - AM.
