Origins
Long ago, if they wanted to break a drought, or to help the tribe survive the winter, the shaman would fast for days. The sorcerer would climb the mountain alone. The priestess would sacrifice a live animal. Today, we are told that to change the world, to manifest our desires, all we need do is to want something enough, and to want it in the correct way. This is not really thaumaturgy. This is SLACK MAGIC.
This label was born as an imprint for the work of laptop musician Loopsnake and his many side projects. It persists as an archive of his works and as an anchor for new music in a time when permanent physical media is a luxury and when the internet becomes more ephemeral and ineffable every passing day.
We make music for your commute to work, and to listen to in headphones, in your bed, in the dark. We make music for the back room of the club, and for your DIY rave in the forest. We make music for musicians, and we make music for music lovers.
[When I did eventually read The Secret, I read that I should simply visualise cheques coming in the mail instead of bills. Who even sends cheques in this day and age, I asked myself? Furiously, I put on my shoes and stormed out the door to my letter box. There was just one envelope in there, addressed to me. I opened it - a cheque for $432. Not income, mind you. It was a a partial refund! Money that was already mine, not all of which was returned. Still, it remains to this day the only cheque that I've ever received in the mail. AM]Process
Slack Magic Records dot com serves to bring music together. Whether it's physically pressed, published to the streamers, SoundCloud only, Bandcamp exclusive or lost to the archives, it is all bound together here. We make records and we keep records.
We believe that musicians should be fairly compensated for their work. While it has always been challenging to make money as an artist, we lament the fact that fewer creators than ever are able to draw a living wage from their creations. We do not believe that music should always be free, but we acknowledge the fact that, functionally speaking, it is.
Slack Magic's music is available to stream or download for free, but if you enjoy the work we invite you to make a purchase through the artist's Bandcamp page, to buy them a coffee through our Artists page, or to donate to them directly if they have made the option available.
Demos
If you're a musician who wishes to join the Slack Magic family despite our lack of infamy, budget and social reach, we do not currently understand why. You are free to contact us at demos@slackmagicrecords.com. If you are an oddball musician from Australia, Thailand or the UAE, especially one with both new music and a scattered legacy, we are particularly interested to hear from you. Chris this means you. Send me your demos. AM
